Unless you have written a novel which unexpectedly boomed overnight, there are some important things to think about when it comes to success of your published novel.
This advice is mostly aimed at self-publishers, however, can be used for traditionally published authors as well, making sure you are doing all the right things which are in your control.
What is success? Firstly, you need to make up your own mind of what success looks like to you. Is it being in the top 100 in a specific genre on Amazon? Is it being number one on the bestseller list? Make sure you have a clear plan on what you want to see to feel like you have succeeded.
The 5 pillars of success.
- A polished book
This may seem like a no-brainer, but a lot of writers decide to publish their books way too soon. Once you have finished your first draft, you need to rewrite, check, edit yourself, ask someone to read it (if you want) and then hire an editor. Don’t rush with your cover either. The cover is the first thing your readers see, invest in a good, quality cover.
- Spread the word
This part is fun when it comes to your friends, family, and colleagues. But it doesn’t stop there. If you neglect marketing after the initial spurt in sales you more than most likely are going to see sales drop, significantly. Marketing is important. If you don’t know how to market yourself, hire someone who knows what they are doing.
- Listen to your readers.
We have all heard the advice “Don’t read your own reviews”, but when you are self-publishing, it can be crucial to read at least the first few coming through.
Often, your reviews will indicate if your book needs more work, and if it does, don’t feel afraid to take it back down and fix the mistakes.
- Don’t give up
If you do end up with a lot of bad reviews, and you feel like what you did wasn’t enough, you can choose to either use it as a learning experience to improve, or you can decide to ignore the bad comments and keep going. Either of these two options works. It is up to you. Just do not give up completely.
If writing gives you joy, you will find a way.
- Establish a solid author platform online
This should be done before all else, but it doesn’t really matter when you do it. It is important to have a solid platform on the internet if you want to meet and interact with your fans. You can also set up a newsletter/email list, where you send your readers news about sales, your next book, and maybe even book signings!
